Civil suit filed in US for state responsibility for military operation on the high seas

01/02/2016

Rodney Dixon QC is representing US and Belgium plaintiffs

Rodney Dixon QC representing US and Belgium plaintiffs has filed a civil suit for damages under the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act in Washington DC (District Court for the District of Columbia) against the State of Israel arising from an operation by its armed forces against a US registered vessel, Challenger I, in international waters in May 2010. The Plaintiffs were passengers on board Challenger I when they were injured and detained during the operation. The ship was carrying humanitarian and medical aid intended for delivery to residents of Gaza when it was intercepted about 70 miles off the coast. It is a groundbreaking case which raises jurisdictional legal issues that have previously not been directly addressed by US courts. The instructing solicitors are Stoke & White LLP, London.
