Former president Morsi collapsed and died during a court appearance on the 17th of June, having been in custody since he was deposed in 2013.
Reports indicated that he had been held in prolonged solitary confinement and had repeatedly been denied medical treatment. Last year, a report by the Detention Review Panel warned that a lack of medical treatment could result in Morsi’s premature death. Rhys was asked to comment on the legal and human rights implications of Morsi’s death in custody.
