Takeover bid for Newcastle United Football Club

29/04/2020

Rodney Dixon KC representing Hatice Cengiz, the fiancee of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi who was killed in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October 2018, has sent a request on her behalf to the Board of the Premier League to halt the proposed acquisition of Newcastle United Football Club by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) which is controlled by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The Crown Prince has been accused of ordering Khashoggi’s murder and covering up his responsibility and that of his inner circle. There are provisions in the Rules of the Premier League which permit the Board to take into account when scrutinising such acquisitions, conduct that would amount to an offence if it had occurred in the UK even if there is no conviction.
