Nicholas Moss KC and Richard Boyle appeared today as Counsel to the Inquest in this Pre-Inquest Review. The hearing was before HH Zeidman KC, sitting as a Judge Coroner, at the Royal Courts of Justice. The hearing considered matters such as the scope of the inquests and whether article 2 ECHR is engaged.
The inquests arise out of a terror attack by Khairi Saadallah. On 20 June 2020, in Forbury Gardens in Reading, Saadallah killed Mr James Furlong, Mr Joseph Ritchie-Bennett and Dr David Wails and injured three others. Saadallah pleaded guilty to three charges of murder and three charges of attempted murder. On 11 January 2021, Saadallah was sentenced to three concurrent terms of whole life imprisonment and, for the attempted murder charges, a concurrent sentence of 24 years’ imprisonment. Sweeney J ruled that Saadallah’s actions were committed “for the purpose of advancing his extremist Islamic cause”, that he was not “suffering from a mental disorder or mental disability which lowered his degree of culpability for any of the offences” and that he did not have any “major mental illness”. The inquests will consider whether the attacks were preventable.
