Inquest into the death of Zara Aleena concludes

27/06/2024

The inquest into the death of Zara Aleena concluded on 26 June 2024. Zara Aleena was tragically killed in the early hours of 26 June 2022 by Jordan McSweeney who had been released from prison on licence a few days earlier. He had subsequently been recalled to prison due to

non-attendance at appointments with probation services, but he was not located by police before he committed the murder.

The inquest was held at East London Coroner’s Court before HM Area Coroner Nadia Persaud from 3 June to 26 June 2024. Nancy Kelehar provided legal assistance to the coroner throughout the inquest.

The inquest heard evidence over 3 weeks from witnesses from HM Prison and Probation Service, the Metropolitan Police Service and the local authority (the London Borough of Redbridge).

The jury concluded that Zara Aleena was unlawfully killed with their narrative conclusion highlighting a number of failings by the state institutions which contributed to her death.

Nancy Kelehar was instructed by LB of Waltham Forest to assist the Coroner.
