Rodney Dixon KC, assisted by Sebastian Bates, has replied on behalf of the applicant in Akremi v Republic of Tunisia, a case currently pending before the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
The written reply addresses factual and legal submissions made by Tunisia in writing in response to the application filed on 24 May 2023 concerning the applicant’s father, Bechir Akremi, a member of Tunisia’s career judiciary who served as public prosecutor at the Court of First Instance in Tunis until he was unlawfully removed from office.
Mr Akremi was arrested in February 2023 and mistreated. He remains in detention.
The African regional group of the International Association of Judges, with the endorsement of the Presidency Committee of the Association, has recently drawn attention to ‘the deep and continuing crisis of the Tunisian judiciary since 2022’, the ‘serious violations of the principle of independence of justice’ and ‘of the elementary rules characterizing the Rule of Law’ committed by the State, and the State’s ‘intolerable attack on the principle of the separation of powers, the foundation of the Rule of law and essential guarantee of the rights and freedoms of everyone’. The group has also called on ‘international organizations to urge the Tunisian authorities to ensure the respect and protection of Tunisian judges’.
