The Bar Human Rights Committee of England and Wales is hosting a panel discussion as a side event to the 56th Session of the UN Human Rights Council on ‘The Rule of Law in Jeopardy in the UAE’. The event is moderated by Anisa Kassamali.
UN Special Rapporteurs have expressed growing concerns about the rule of law being under threat in the UAE, particularly in respect of ‘terror’ charges brought against 84 persons from civil society groups calling for democratic reform. The judgment stage is now imminent and there is the potential for death sentences and long sentences to be imposed.
The event seeks to highlight the UN Special Rapporteurs’ concerns during this critical period. It will take place in Geneva during the 56th Session of the UN Human Rights Council, when Member States will be gathered. The UAE authorities have responded to the UN experts without addressing the violations identified and have claimed that the allegations are ‘premature’ given that the trial is ongoing.
The panel will feature experts, including family members of current prisoners, former detainees, and human rights lawyers. This event will take place at the Geneva Press Club on Monday 8th July at 4pm. It will also be accessible via Zoom. Please register here via the BHRC website.
