Government Settles Air Pollution Case Following Girl’s Death

31/10/2024

The UK government has reached a settlement with the family of Ella Adoo-Kissi-Debrah, a nine-year-old girl who died in 2013 due to an asthma attack exacerbated by air pollution. This landmark case marks the first time air pollution has been officially recognised as a cause of death in the UK.

The government has expressed its sincere condolences and committed to implementing measures to improve air quality. This includes a review of how air quality information is communicated to the public and the development of a more ambitious Clean Air Strategy.

David Barr KC, leading Colin Thomann KC and Scarlett Milligan acted for the UK Government.
