Ian Paterson was convicted in 2017 of wounding with intent for performing unnecessary and harmful surgeries and was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment.
The inquests will examine whether the deaths of a significant number of former patients were linked to Mr Paterson’s treatment or other treatment shortcomings, and investigate the later recall process as well as wider systemic issues including the oversight by NHS management, hospitals, and regulatory bodies.
The complex inquests will last into 2026, divided into modules focusing on the cause of death, systemic issues, regulatory failings, the patient recall process, and preventing future deaths
Nicholas Moss KC and Susan Jones are representing University Hospitals Birmingham NHS foundation Trust and a number of individual clinicians, instructed by DAC Beachcroft. UHB is the successor NHS Trust to the Trust that employed Mr Paterson.
