Inquest into the death of Rhianan Rudd begins

28/02/2025

The inquest into the death of Rhianan Rudd began this week. Rhianan Rudd was charged with terrorism offences, making her the youngest individual in the UK to face such charges. However, she was later found to be a victim of modern slavery and the charges were dropped. She had also been subject to an investigation by MI5 and referred to Prevent. In May 2022, she was found deceased at a children’s home in Nottinghamshire. The inquest will examine the roles of various agencies, including the Crown Prosecution Service, Counter Terrorism Police, MI5, social services and mental health services, in assessing whether appropriate care and support were provided before her death. The inquest is being heard by the Chief Coroner, Her Honour Judge Alexia Durran, and will sit until 21st May at Chesterfield Coroner’s Court.

Richard Boyle is junior counsel for the Secretary of State for the Home Department.
