Russell Hopkins and Anisa Kassamali continue to act in what is likely the largest ever group action brought in the English Courts to date: Municipio de Mariana and others v BHP Group. They represented approximately 620,000 claimants in a first stage trial from October 2024 – March 2025 dealing primarily with matters concerning BHP’s liability for the collapse of Brazil’s Fundão Dam in November 2015.
Preparations now continue for the second stage of the proceedings. Following a case management conference on 2 – 3 July 2025, Mrs Justice O’Farrell made various orders including in relation to the selection of lead claimants, amendments to the parties’ pleadings and costs matters.
