Undercover Policing Inquiry’s Tranche 3 (Phase 1) Hearings Begin 13 October

14/10/2025

This week, the Undercover Policing Inquiry enters a pivotal new phase. In his opening statement, lead counsel David Barr KC affirmed that the role of race will be central to the inquiry’s work, especially in relation to how undercover officers monitored justice campaigns in the 1990s and 2000s.

The latest stage of the inquiry, will examine the activity of the shadowy Metropolitan Police Special Demonstration Squad (SDS) between 1993 and 2007. The inquiry will hear from campaigners including the parents of murdered Stephen Lawrence, and Sukhdev Reel, whose son Ricky died in what she believes was a racist attack.

Yesterday’s opening drew widespread press coverage.
