Inquest concludes into death of British security guard killed by drone strike on tanker in the Indian Ocean

20/11/2025

On 29 July 2021, the MV Mercer Street was in international waters off the coast of Oman when it was struck by an Iranian manufactured explosive laden one-way-attack drone. The attack killed the Captain and a British security guard. The vessel had been the subject of two previous drone incidents in the hours preceding the fatal attack.

Following three days of evidence, HM Coroner for Hampshire returned a conclusion of unlawful killing. He found that the Mercer Street was the intended target of the attack but could not be satisfied on the evidence before him either who launched the drones or from where. Anthony Lenanton acted for the UK Ministry of Defence.
