Rhys Davies co-authored an opinion piece with Ben Keith, 5 St Andrew’s Hill Chambers, for Newsweek, warning that the frontrunner to lead INTERPOL, Turkey’s Mustafa Serkan Sabanca, represents a direct threat to the institution’s integrity and mission of political neutrality.

The piece highlights a recently leaked classified memo in which Sabanca instructs Turkish authorities to disguise a politically motivated prosecution of a human-rights lawyer as an embezzlement case, in an effort to circumvent Article 3 of INTERPOL’s constitution (which bans “political” cases).
Davies and Keith argue that electing Sabanca would send a dangerous signal: that systematic misuse of Interpol’s mechanisms, including politically-motivated Red Notice requests and extradition attempts, can be rewarded rather than punished. Such a precedent, they warn, would fundamentally erode global trust in INTERPOL’s neutrality and put dissidents, refugees and exiles at grave risk.
