The Chief Coroner, Her Honour Judge Alexia Durran, has handed down her conclusions in the inquest into the death of Rhianan Rudd.
Rhianan Rudd was charged with terrorism offences, making her the youngest individual in the UK to face such charges. However, she was later found to be a victim of modern slavery and the charges were dropped. She had also been subject to an investigation by MI5 and referred to Prevent. In May 2022, she was found deceased at a children’s home in Nottinghamshire.
The Chief Coroner found that article 2 was not engaged. Any missed opportunities were not systemic and/or there was no causal link between those missed opportunities and Rhianan’s death. As a result of this, and changes that had been made since Rhianan’s death, it was not necessary to make a Report to Prevent Future Deaths. The Chief Coroner concluded that Rhianan’s death was the result of a self-inflicted act but it was not possible to ascertain her intention. Richard Boyle was junior counsel for the Secretary of State for the Home Department.
