Ellen was instructed for an NHS Wales Health Board in a one-week inquest into the death of a woman one day after giving birth in an NHS hospital.
The inquest involved a number of experts in midwifery, obstetrics and anaesthesia, and involved detailed consideration of the management of the Deceased’s VTE risk throughout her pregnancy.
After considering the differing views amongst the experts as to medical cause of death, the Coroner reached a conclusion that the medical cause of death was a pulmonary embolism in the context of pre-eclampsia. She recorded a conclusion of natural causes.
