Application filed at UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on behalf of Ms Zeynab Javadli

11/10/2022

Ms Javadli is a former internationally award winning gymnast from Azerbaijan who is currently living in the UAE having previously been married to Saeed Al Maktoum, the son of the former ruler of Dubai, and the nephew of the current ruler and the Prime Minister of the UAE. Her application to the UN Human Rights Council and it’s mandate holders alleges serious and persistent violations of international human rights law committed by the UAE authorities, including the police and the local courts, over the past three years against her and her three young daughters Sanaa, Asia, and Salama Al Maktoum.

The UN, including the Working Group on Discrimination against Women and Girls and the Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges, are requested in the application urgently to secure Ms Javadli and her daughters’ safety in light of previous and ongoing abuse and harassment, to ensure that her children are allowed to remain with her and that they are free to travel together, and that the national courts determine her custody case independently and impartially, free of undue interference from the royal family and the UAE authorities.

The application has been filed by her counsel Rodney Dixon KC and Anne Coulon.
