The Department of Transport has today announced its decision to classify cars with Automated Lane Keeping Systems (‘ALKS’, also known as ‘traffic jam chauffeur’) as ‘automated’ vehicles within the meaning of the Automated and Electric Vehicles Act 2018.
The decision brings automated vehicle law into practical effect in the UK. The Automated and Electric Vehicles Act 2018, enacted in July 2018, was brought into force last week, on 21 April 2021 by the first regulations (the first commencement order) under the Act.
TGC has been at the forefront of the development of AEV law since 2016. Members of chambers have written the first British book on the topic, assisted public consultations on AEV law and lectured in the UK and overseas. The first edition of the TGC AEV Law newsletter will be published soon
