Nicholas Chapman opens case for BEIS in Post Office Inquiry

14th October 2022

Nicholas Chapman today gave the opening statement for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy in the Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry.

The inquiry, chaired by Sir Wyn Williams, is examining the implementation and failings of the Post Office Horizon IT system over two decades, and the conduct of the Post Office leading to the imprisonment and financial ruin of hundreds of postmasters in what has been described as the biggest miscarriage of justice in British history.

BEIS is the Post Office’s ultimate sole shareholder and policy sponsor.  It established the inquiry in September 2020 and has sponsored it throughout.  The inquiry is expected to last until 2023 or 2024.

Nicholas is leading counsel for BEIS, assisted by Alasdair Henderson of 1 Crown Office Row and Matt Lewin of Cornerstone Barristers.
