Murdo represented the second accused, Lamin Fhimah, in the Pan-Am/Lockerbie bombing trial in the Netherlands. Other notable High Court acquittals include Andy Coulson in his trial for perjury, Yousif Badri, a Doctor charged with terrorist offences, and Andrew Grant, managing director of a haulage company, charged with gross negligence homicide. In 2021, he defended the Chief Constable of Police Scotland in a landmark prosecution following a missed ‘999’ call.
As a prosecutor, he served as Crown Counsel and Senior Crown Counsel between 2001 and 2005.
Since 2012, Murdo has been UK delegate to the Criminal Law Committee of the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE). He is also a practising advocate at the Scottish Bar (Compass Chambers).
Recognised as a “Public Inquires specialist” in Chambers & Partners, Murdo was counsel to the inquiry in the first inquiry to be held under the 2005 Act, the ‘Billy Wright’ Inquiry (2005-2010): a major public inquiry into alleged state collusion in the murder of a prominent Northern Irish paramilitary prisoner, and the management of the Maze prison. He was vetted to highest level (DV).
Since that time he has appeared for Core Participants in many important statutory, and other, inquiries acting either for commercial organisations or public authorities. He is currently writing a chapter on the law and practice of public inquiries for the Stair Memorial Encycopledia.
