Infected blood inquiry

20/05/2024

The Chair of the Infected Blood Inquiry, Sir Brian Langstaff, published his Final Report 20th May 2024. The Inquiry was established to examine the circumstances in which men, women and children were given infected blood or infected blood products in what has been called the worst treatment disaster in the history of the NHS.

Chambers played a major part in the representation of the Department of Health and Social Care and of a significant number of high-profile health ministers from the 1980s to the current day, as well as many senior civil servants who were called to give evidence.

The DHSC team comprised Nicholas Moss KC, initially as lead junior from July 2018 and latterly as second lead counsel working with Eleanor Grey KC (of 39 Essex Chambers). Anthony Lenanton was appointed as junior counsel from October 2020. Kathryn Howarth was appointed as junior counsel from May 2021 and Saoirse Townshend was appointed as junior counsel from June 2022. Harriet Gilchrist and Sebastian Bates also assisted the team. Rochelle Powell was instructed as Junior Counsel to the Inquiry
