Aston Mclean inquest: jury returns conclusions in death following police contact in Reading

25/11/2019

Nicholas Moss was Counsel to the Inquest to the Senior Coroner for Berkshire, Mrs Heidi Connor, in the inquest into the death of Aston Mclean. The jury returned their conclusions on Friday 22 November.

Mr Mclean was running from police in Wokingham Road, Reading in the early hours of 6 August 2014. One police officer, giving chase on foot, deployed captor spray. A second officer had driven alongside Mr Mclean in an armed response vehicle and Mr Mclean fell under that vehicle suffering compression asphyxia. The jury returned detailed factual findings in section 3 of the Record of Inquest. Judgmental ‘Middleton’ conclusions on relevant police and ambulance issues were left to the jury under section 4 of the Record of Inquest. The jury, having been directed not to answer those issues if they were no more than speculative in terms of causation, declined to comment on those issues.
