Paul Kilcoyne was instructed by Browell Smith & Co Solicitors to represent a number of employees who were engaged as Appropriate Adults required to sit in and supervise police interviews involving juveniles and vulnerable adults. All Claimants were involved in the interview process concerning the notorious torture and murder of Jimmy Prout.
All Claimants developed significant psychiatric injuries through participating in the interview process. The Claims were based on the employer’s failure to carry out a Risk assessment which should have screened and restricted the type of case referred on to the Appropriate Adult. Liability was denied. The Defendant refused to attend a JSM. All claims were settled for significant sums on Day 3 of the virtual trial before HHJ Freedman sitting in Newcastle-upon Tyne County Court.
