Finnish national, Tiina Jauhiainen files criminal case in Germany

09/12/2022

A criminal complaint against Emirati officials has been lodged with the Office of the Federal Prosecutor in Karlsruhe, Germany, on behalf of Tiina Jauhiainen, a Finnish national who resides in the UK. The complaint invokes the domestic criminal provisions by which Germany gives effect to the United Nations Convention against Torture, to which both Germany and the United Arab Emirates are party.

On 27 September 2022, Ms Jauhiainen spoke at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva as a member of a panel on justice and accountability for torture in the United Arab Emirates. The MENA Rights Group has made a recording of the discussion available on YouTube here.

Ms Jauhiainen’s account of her abduction from the yacht Nostromo and detention and torture in Dubai was accepted by Sir Andrew McFarlane P in his fact-finding judgment in the much-publicised proceedings between the Ruler of Dubai and Her Royal Highness Princess Haya bint Al Hussein concerning the welfare of their children.

Ms Jauhiainen is represented in her efforts by Rodney Dixon KC, assisted by Sebastian Bates.
