Rhys Davies appeared as an expert guest on CBS 60 Minutes, America’s most-watched news magazine show. The programme focused on the issue of the misuse of Interpol’s Red Notices.
Interpol Red Notices serve as international alerts to member countries about individuals sought for prosecution or to serve sentences.
The discussion on 60 Minutes, renowned for its in-depth and investigative journalism, centred around the growing concerns over the exploitation of Interpol Red notices. Instances where Red Notices are used for political, oppressive, or unjust purposes were examined, highlighting the need for reform and stricter regulation in their issuance and enforcement.
Rhys has extensive background in international criminal law and human rights law and spoke alongside Ben Keith of 5SAH Chambers. Rhys commented that “The 60 Minutes episode provided a critical platform to highlight the human cost of Red Notice abuse. We hope it prompts wider discussion and action towards safeguarding individuals from politically motivated misuse of this system.”
Rhys and Ben are leading experts on Interpol Red Notices and co-authored the report Undue Influence: the UAE and Interpol with Sir David Calvert-Smith in 2021. They are editors of the Red Notice Monitor blog which provides commentary on Interpol and the problems created by repressive regimes misusing this system. They are also co-founders of International Human Rights Advisors.
60 Minutes is the most-watched news magazine in the United States and has won more Emmy Awards than any primetime broadcast, including a special Lifetime Achievement Emmy. It has won almost every broadcast journalism award, including 25 Peabody awards for excellence in television broadcasting.
