Juliet Wells appointed as Counsel to the Andrew Malkinson Inquiry

26/10/2023

The Lord Chancellor has today formally announced an independent inquiry into the miscarriage of justice suffered by Andrew Malkinson, chaired by HHJ Sarah Munro KC. Juliet Wells has been appointed as Counsel to the Inquiry, led by Sophie Cartwright KC.

Mr Malkinson was wrongfully convicted of rape in 2004, and thereafter spent 17 years in prison before he was finally exonerated by the Court of Appeal earlier this year. The Inquiry will examine the handling of the case by Greater Manchester Police, the CPS, and the Criminal Cases Review Commission, in order to identify why the miscarriage of justice suffered by Mr Malkinson occurred, and how it was able to persist for so long.

Further information about the Inquiry is available here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/andrew-malkinson-inquiry.
