Abdulrahman Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, a prominent Egyptian-Turkish poet and activist, has been released following more than a year and eight months of imprisonment in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He was granted a pardon by the President of the UAE. He had been arrested in Lebanon in December 2024 and extradited to the UAE in January 2025. United Nations experts had called for his release, stating that he had been arrested and detained for exercising his right to free speech.
In a statement released by his family on his release, they said:
‘Our thanks go to all governments, institutions, human rights, legal and media organisations, and individuals who supported Abdulrahman and his family throughout this difficult period, whether through their efforts, advocacy, public support, or personal concern.
His release brings to an end an exceptionally difficult period for Abdulrahman, his family and those close to him. We are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed, in any way, to reaching this outcome. We now look forward to Abdulrahman returning to his family and loved ones and beginning the next chapter of his life in peace and good health.’
Rodney Dixon KC acted as international counsel in this case on behalf of Mr Al-Qaradawi and his family including in proceedings before the United Nations.
