Complaint filed at International Criminal Court (ICC) on behalf of the East Turkistan Government in Exile

8th July 2020

Rodney Dixon QC representing the East Turkistan Government in Exile, assisted by Anne Coulon and Paul Erdunast, have filed a Complaint at the ICC under the provisions of the ICC Statute requesting the Prosecutor to open an investigation into allegations of genocide and crimes against humanity being committed against the Uyghur and other Turkic peoples in China.

China is not a State Party to the ICC Statute. The Prosecutor can however exercise jurisdiction over these alleged crimes due to the evidence presented in the Complaint that they are continuing crimes which started in Tajikistan and Cambodia, which are both ICC States Parties, where Uyghurs were rounded up by the Chinese authorities and deported to China to be imprisoned in mass detention centres. The Prosecutor has indicated that she is now considering the Complaint in order to decide whether to take the case forward.
