High Court trial begins today in landmark human rights claim concerning Tanzanian gold mine

A significant High Court trial begins today, 7 October 2026, concerning allegations of serious human rights abuses connected with the North Mara gold mine in Tanzania.

Dominic Grieve KC, Russell Hopkins, Professor Andrew Higgins and Anisa Kassamali have been instructed by Leigh Day in the claim, which has been brought by the families of two 23-year-old artisanal miners who were allegedly killed by security forces at the mine in 2019.

Instructed by Daniel Leader and Alex Wessely of Leigh Day, the trial begins today and is expected to continue until 20 November 2026.
